It's hard to believe 2026 is already halfway over, especially considering how much our association has already accomplished this year. From the conclusion of our lawsuit against the City of Troy and other legal battles over sprinklers and tap-in fees to the introduction of the Housing Readiness Package — a legislative zoning reform effort HBAM has supported since 2022 — advocacy efforts are moving rapidly. Your help (yes, every individual member can lend a hand) is a necessary component to the success of these efforts. 

As I reflect on the successes we’ve seen over the last few months and throughout our association’s history, it’s worth noting the number of people involved in these initiatives. We have a small but mighty team at the HBA of Michigan working daily on the issues that impact our industry, but as a member-driven organization, our participation is paramount. 

Throughout this issue, you’ll hear about the many opportunities members have to participate in HBAM’s advocacy initiatives and make their voices heard when it comes to policy decisions. Our government relations team brings members in to testify before the Legislature, the YP Committee hosts an annual Capitol Day event to get members engaged with the political process, and during this critical election year, members had the opportunity to attend a forum with all the candidates for Michigan’s 2026 gubernatorial election. The opportunities are there for all of us to act. More members need to do so to sustain our success and make our voice louder. 

We have a great team in Lansing, but they need our support and their messages need to be reinforced. When you receive a call to action in your inbox, take the one minute needed to click a few buttons and send a message to your legislator. When there is an opportunity to meet elected officials from your region or speak anywhere in support of HBA efforts, show up. Participate in legislative roundtables or other advocacy initiatives at your local HBA and contribute to our four pillars of giving. 

Lastly, show up at our Annual HBA Summer Convention August 5 – 7 in Traverse City. It is open to all HBA members. Early bird rates are available until July 13 and most participants are able to write off the business expenses associated with attending. Have a great summer building season and I hope to see you in TC.
